He has made a fool of all of us
Claiming the power no man can have
Commanding things mock the Law
Giving no regard to our lives or our nation

Something must be done
He must be stopped
Though the example our leaders have in mind
Might be too drastic a choice to take

They have offered me so much
To betray the man I claim to love
To hand over his life to them
In exchange for immunity from being punished beside him

I have to choose if their offer is enough
If 30 pieces of silver should pay
For his head upon a platter
And his death to come as a heretical traitor

And if he’d left well enough alone
I might have simply walked away
And left the Pharisees carry all the blood
That will stain the hands for those who hold the nails

But somehow he seems to know
The betrayal of my thoughts
The agony of my heart
The anger of my soul

“What you do, do quickly”
He said with compassion I’ll never understand
As if he’d known from the moment we met
The destiny of some unknown plan

That silver would set up my life
Up for comfort without struggle
For escape from death
For freedom and rest

At least that was my thought
As I stained my hands with their coins
And damned my soul to disgrace
With pain and guilt forevermore
